JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER
This fire hydrant reminded Helen and me of a Jean-Paul Gaultier creation. I guess what is so appealing about France compared to America is that there is a beauty to everyday objects. The most mundane and ordinary, the most utilitarian of things have a beauty built into them that is an essential part of what they are. They must be more than useful - they must be beautiful. Things in America sometimes have an unexpected beauty, a beauty that transcends their utility, but they are never designed that way. In France, it seems that beauty is designed right into the object from conception and is an essential part of the object.
