CHANGING FACES (AND HAIRSTYLES) OF IRELAND

Moore Street emporium offering a variety of wigs for new and old Irish alike.

There is definitely racism in Ireland (where isn't there?), but at least there doesn't seem to be the overt physical and verbal violence that characterizes other Western European societies.  That's not to say that the racism isn't just as hurtful to our new fellow citizens and just as corrosive to the wider society.  Ireland, like many other places is dealing with radical change in both positive and negative ways.  The positive is that Irish people get to experience and enjoy the world's diverse cultures without the American Wake, as in the past. We get to enjoy being part of a world that flows through our country, enriching every aspect of our existence and validating our humanity after 800 years of England's dehumanization project.  The negative is that many people feel threatened by the loss of insularity, the perceived loss of our uniqueness as among the few homogenous societies in Europe.  The challenges of the modern world - waves of refugees, cultural transformation, pressure on our language - are all working their way through Irish society.  The road ahead is long and difficult but it looks like we will have new options in hairstyles to make the future more beautiful for all of us.
