As I begin the process of tearing out our stairs, I am becoming more aware of how stone is put together to make beautiful walls.
In this picture of an unfinished wall in Vézières close to where Kerry lives, I see that the irregular shaped stones are set into a mixture of sand and earth. There is really nothing holding them together except gravity. Chaux (a mixture of cooked calcium and sand) will eventually seal the joints and lessen the visual impact of the raw stones. But for the moment, the wall beautifully reflects the weak autumn sunlight and makes me think of the colors of California at this time of the year.
