DOGGONE

I had dinner with the Lightfoots last week before their departure.
Peter told an amusing story about a stray dog he and his wife Edwina had encountered.
Here's how he tells the story:

"We were having dinner with friends at Le Metré restaurant just outside Montsoreau, in the Loire Valley. I told the story of how, a few days earlier, my wife Edwina and I were walking our dog near the church in Montsoreau when a stray dog began to follow. He was smelly, limping and was very thin with all his ribs showing. He was persistent but finally I shooed him away. An hour later, up in the vineyard a mileaway, he suddenly reappeared. He seemed gentle and was patient with our little dog who wanted to play. The lost dog was a hunting dog and had a kindly face. Edwina persuaded me to take him home where we fed and watered him and gave him a bed for the night. Next morning we took him to our vet in Saumur. He had no collar or tags so they phoned up ASPA, the dog refuge, who collected him. We took a final photo. At our dinner Françoise told us of a day’s hunting she had recently enjoyed. She showed us pictures of the dogs and explained that the owner had lost one of the pack. They all looked identical to our stray. We showed her our picture. “I will call the owner immediately”, Françoise said. Could it really have been the same dog?"

Peter doesn't say how the story ended.  Perhaps there's a second installment.
