Sometime in the 1930s or 40s the original stone stairway was turned around and a new stairway was created. It looks like there was an archway that supported that staircase with a passageway through to the neighbors. The archway was filled with rubble, as was the the remaining steps , to create support for the new stairway. Concrete steps were created holding the whole ensemble together. All of that has to come out so we can install a traditional chêne staircase. At a stroke (or more correctly, at many strokes of a sledgehammer) we will gain a lot of space and have a beautiful piece of sculpture in our living room.
