French men wear scarves the way the English wear ties.
But gay French men wear their scarves in a particular way. When a couple are wearing scarves, there will always be one who wraps it around his neck (the fem?), and one who throws it jauntily over one shoulder (the butch?).
Straight French men don't seem to be aware of the code du foulard. But then again, the French invented the word "effete" to apply to everyone.
